Much nicer since they gravelled the entrance road and parking lot. Plus they built a separate kayak and canoe launch, which I greatly appreciate. I do wish they still allowed camping.

Perfect place to explore Sparkleberry swamp! Plenty of parking, and two concrete boat ramps. Just a side note though.
**ALWAYS go with someone who is familiar with the swamp! It is very dense and the water level changes which makes it look different each trip, and it is very easy to get turned around and lost in there. At least have a GPS with bread crumbs or go with someone who knows**

Public boat access to Upper Santee Swamp- via “old Sparkleberry Landing”
HERE you can see SC DNR public boat access into the 1,600 acres of backcountry creeks, lakes, pin oak flats and old stunted Cypress. I grew up fishing and hunting this wilderness region. It quite awesome. There was a possible sighting of the GOD BIRD and birders from all over the nation came there to search that hard timber and see what they might see!
Prior to 1989 if you were brave enough to climb up and look out from a 20-30 feet tree blind in the 7 acre Murgurts Lake, or nearby in the vast 12 acre Superman Flats with lines of acorn ridges, you would see hundreds of flights of Mallards mostly every morning in early December - winging into the area, from Santee NWR : which would average from late November- February (> 100,000 - 125,000) mallards year after year, after year!

Rustic but beautiful somewhat untouched natural area. Take the bug spray and the sunblock!

What a beautiful swamp. I have grown to appreciate swamps. Lots of great wildlife to see from birds to alligators. Great spot to kayak, just remember where you come and and how to get back. Its easy to let you kayak in on the ramp and get out. Its a nice cement double boat ramp, with a spot to the right for Kayaks. It’s easy to get turned around in the swamp. The Cyprus trees are beautiful as well as the tupelo trees. Don’t paddle too fast or you will miss things, take it slow and enjoy all of God’s creation around you.
